Comment Spam

June 2nd, 2007 | by LTD

Yesterday morning and this morning, LTD News was the target of so-called comment spammers. According to Wikipedia, comment spam is

a form of spamdexing. It is done by automatically posting random comments or promoting commercial services to blogs, wikis, guestbooks, or other publicly accessible online discussion boards. Any web application that accepts and displays hyperlinks submitted by visitors may be a target.

However, thanks to Dr. Dave, our comments are free from messages for on-line poker or body-part enlarging drugs. His anti-spam plug-in Spam Karma 2 (SK2), which we have set to “Kinda Mean,” takes care of 99.9% of comment spam. And it is learning – not only from us, but from all other Spam Karma users.

The spam harvest on Friday morning was just under 200 within a short hour, and this morning 297 within 90 minutes.
