On our way to New Orleans

October 31st, 2006 | by mm | No Comments

A lot happened this month and none of it could be read about here.

  • We were growing in total membership numbers and subscriptions
  • We have a fair number of members not being subscribed and we need to get a distribution of news ready for those members
  • We worked with TAC on the Tool’s panel program and on the TAC annual report
  • We secured with ATA headquarter a realistic timetable for the ATA LTD officers to come on board
  • We got our info in the bag every conference member receives
  • We had prominent exposure in several industry publications including the ATA Chronicle
  • We secured more articles for publication on our site

Status 8.20.06

Here are some highlights for last week:

  • Michael Metzger will remain the contact for ATA LTD activities until representatives are elected by the membership of the LTD at the Division Meeting in New Orleans on November, 4th.
  • A nomination committee needs to be appointed to get the election off the ground for November. Anyone interested to join the committee, please contact Michael. Anyone you would like to nominate for a position in the division, please contact Michael Metzger for now.
  • Eric Bullington is joining forces. He will work with Michael Wahlster at a WIKI project and contribute content on the Website. We are very excited to have our first article some time soon!
  • We contacted ATA Chronicle for possible posting of articles we find interesting in the context of the LTD objectives.
  • We have also written an announcement for the Chronicle to reach a wider audience of ATA members. We hope more members will join us in our mailing list throughout the next few weeks.
  • The group will certainly be listed in next year’s ATA membership renewal form. You can then join us automatically.
  • We want to contact industry experts for possible content syndication. If you think you know someone we should contact for content, please let us know (Michael Metzger).
  • Also a reminder, this Division is open for any ATA membership level to join.
  • We need to celebrate the division. Party On, New Orleans here we come! So apart from the official date on Saturday were we should vote for proper representation, we think we need the night out before to convince some more folks to participate in the activities of this division. After all there is nothing more dead serious than committments made while getting drunk in the swamps! But before we get there, you need to join our mailing list. See for details below and in the left pane.

Upside down: LTD is established!

The Division was approved by the Board of the ATA on 8.12.06. Once again thanks to all the visionairies willing to sign the petition!

Now we are going to move things around a bit and maybe take some pages down as they are no longer needed. What we really want to start now are the categories that make sense for the Language Technology Division and are interesting to Language Professionals working with Language Technology.

But to give everyone an idea where we stand and what is happening and what needs to be done (yes, we are really NOT interested to turn this into “one man dog & pony show” but into a real division with members participating).

Michael Wahlster, our BlogMeister asked me to write a blog. To tell you what happens on my way to work on Highway 280 (people I call asking me “Michael are you phoning from the car AGAIN?”). When I let the ideas coming to my mind resonate with everyone I trust (like Michael Wahlster) and the things I think we need to do next (talking to Tony or Mary).

So fine, I will write about the things that are happening. I think that is good. Transparency. “No backroom dealings”. You want to be part of the team, just join. See for yourself!

Don’t Stop Now

This last week (7.11.06) the petition drive reached “critical mass” for the required 20 signatures and will be submitted at the next ATA Board meeting in August.

Which does not mean that anyone interested should not continue to support the effort. Join us here, subscribe to the group either via RSS newsfeed or the mailing list. And yes, please continue to spread the word. Every ATA member at any level is welcome to join and participate in the groups activities.

Next we want to add Language Technology related content to the website and we have some ideas and will contact some experts we would like invite to contribute. But we also are DEFINITELY excited about any suggestions you make. Keep the good ideas coming!
